Summer 6

Eleven knots at the bottom of Lamma, 12 knots at the top and an exhilarating 14 knots off Sok Kwu Wan. Fantastic racing conditions on Sunday, the 9th of August, in unusual westerly winds – thanks to Typhoon Dolphin. It was also hot, extremely hot – 36oC – and, in his welcome at 1015, race officer Barry Truhol advised everyone to drink water, and lots of it!

Racing started in Tung O Wan at 1030 with three sleek IRC boats heading off to a club mark, followed by ten spirited PHS cruisers and, finally, a nifty trimaran. Course 46 (L), after P1 Buoy, included a leg to Weather Beacon Buoy for Redeye, 2 Easy and Wicked. The PHS fleet, on Course 46 (S), powered northwards past power station and the Shek Kok Tsui headland before gybing into the Lamma Channel and running south to St George’s Island and the finish off Sok Kwu Wan.

First home in an amazing 1 hour, 41 minutes and 19 seconds, was the Beneteau First 50, Tipsy Easy. Less than two minutes later came the Dehler 42, Daydream. On handicap, Redeye nailed 1st in IRC 1 and 2 Easy took IRC 2. As well as Line Honours, Tipsy Easy also picked up handicap honours in PHS A ahead of Generations.

In PHS B, despite three attempts to cross the finish line, Scallywag chalked up a 1st on handicap with Shun Shui in 2nd and the boisterous Five O One, 3rd. Carbon Credit, a 32-foot Farrier and the sole multihull, completed its course in 1 hour, 48 minutes and 55 seconds.

Eight crews enjoyed a seafood lunch and informal prize-giving at the new Lamma Hilton. Division winners were presented with bottles of wine by the ABC’s rear commodore sailing, Chris Pooley. As a reminder, the final (Race 7) of the Aberdeen Boat Club’s Summer Series 2026 will be held on Sunday, the 23rd of August.
